Theft is an issue that affects virtually all workplaces, regardless of size or industry. It can range from stealing small items like stationary or food, to more serious offences like data theft and financial crimes. So, how can you prevent theft in the workplace? This blog will go over three ways that you can help deter thieves in your workplace – let’s get started!
Develop a Robust Theft Policy
First and foremost, you will want to have a robust theft policy in place. Ensure that you have clearly defined what constitutes unacceptable behaviour in your company’s code of conduct – this should include outlining what theft is, the consequences of theft and the process of investigating reports. It is also a good idea to create an anonymous system so that employees can report suspicious behaviour without the fear of retaliation.
Install CCTV Cameras
The visible presence of CCTV cameras alone can be a powerful theft deterrent to both external intruders and internal employees as potential thieves are far less likely to steal if they know they are under surveillance. By strategically placing cameras in high-risk areas like entrances, exits, high-value displays, tills and stockrooms, you can help detect suspicious activity in real-time and put a stop to it before any theft takes place.
Plus, if the unfortunate does happen and you workplace experiences theft, the CCTV footage can be used as compelling evidence to identify and prosecute offenders, helping to secure convictions.
Install Access Control
Access control systems are another great way to prevent workplace theft. By installing door entry systems that use keycards, biometrics or pin codes, businesses can restrict physical access to certain areas, only allowing access for authorised personnel.
Not only do these systems act as a deterrent for thieves, but they also provide an audit trail that allows you to see who entered specific areas at a certain time. This audit trail can once again be used as evidence to identify and prosecute offenders. Plus, if you opt for a keycard system and a worker loses their card or it is stolen, you can immediately deactivate it and revoke access.
