Security Systems for Commercial Buildings

A commercial building is any property used for business activities instead of residential living, for example, hotels, shops, restaurants and offices. These spaces often require different security systems to residential properties due to their scale, complex layouts, valuable assets and increased vulnerability. In this blog, we will go through the three most essential security systems to install for commercial buildings so that your premises can stay secured all year long. Let’s get started!

CCTV Cameras

CCTV cameras are a critical part of any security system, whether you’re securing an office, shop or restaurant. They are effective burglar deterrents, especially when signposted so that customers – and criminals - are aware they are on camera. Plus, in the unfortunate event that your commercial property is broken into, CCTV camera footage provides valuable evidence that can be sent to authorities to help identify the perpetrators.

When installing CCTV cameras in your shop or workplace, make sure that they cover the entire area, particularly any entrances, exits, high value displays and blind spots. You can even get CCTV systems that have motion sensors so that recording is only triggered when there is motion in the area. This helps to save on the amount of security footage that needs to be stored.

Burglar Alarms

Intruder alarms are also essential for commercial buildings. If you install them at entry points like windows and doors, you will be alerted by the motion sensor if anyone tries to enter. The loud, blaring alarm should scare off any trespassers, or at least alert neighbouring properties or passersby which can help to increase your chances of catching the trespasser in the act. With an IDS burglar alarm, you will also be alerted as soon as a security breach occurs, thus further increasing the chances of the criminal being stopped and caught.

Similarly to CCTV cameras, displaying a sign that indicates the presence of alarm systems can help to discourage criminals from targeting your property in the first place.

Access Control Systems

Access control systems are also ideal for commercial properties, particularly if they have areas with valuable items, stock rooms or other areas that are restricted to authorised personnel only. By installing an access control system that uses an intercom, biometric data, fobs or keycards, you can keep track of who enters and exits your building and restricted areas and at what times. This is not only important for preventing trespassers in restricted areas, but can also help to deter internal theft from staff which can be a major issue in retail stores.

At IDS, we can integrate all three of these systems to create a bespoke and comprehensive security network for your commercial property.
