How Do Burglar Alarms Work

One of the most reliable ways that you can protect your property is by installing a high-quality intruder alarm system. Regardless of the size of your premises, ensuring that your doors, windows and other entry points are secure is vital to keeping your valuables, family and employees safe at all times.

Over time, studies have shown that buildings that have an effective burglar alarm system installed are up to three times less likely to be broken into than a building without any protection at all. Therefore, having one installed is something that all building owners should at least consider.

Here, we take a closer look at burglar alarms, how exactly they work and the advantages they offer when installed.

Types of Burglar Alarms

Despite the main purpose of burglar alarms being to detect intrusion, the ways in which they operate can vary, resulting in different types of systems. These include:

  • Motion Sensors– These systems can be installed on both the interior and exterior of homes and businesses and work by triggering an alarm when movement is detected.
  • Door & Window Sensors– These alarms are triggered when unauthorised access via windows and doors is identified. And are made up of two parts. The first is installed on the door or window and the second is installed on the door frame and window sill.
  • Shock Sensors– These systems trigger an alarm by identifying an impact or vibration caused by a window or door being broken into
  • Break Glass Detectors– These types of alarms are triggered when the sound of breaking glass is identified. They contain an audio microphone designed to recognise the frequency of glass breaking.

Burglar Alarm Components

Even though the aforementioned systems can work exclusively, they ultimately work the best when they’re integrated together into one, all-encompassing security system. Having systems that are able to detect a number of activities across several areas of your property, makes it much more difficult for criminals and intruders to overcome.

Control Panel

Every security system comes with a control panel, which as the name suggests, is what is used to control the system. All alarms are connected to the control panel, allowing it to gather and process the information from each detector and respond accordingly. The panel is usually made up of an intuitive, easy-to-operate touchpad that allows the user to enable and disable the alarms as well as communicate with each device. The majority of panels also feature built-in communicators in order to quickly contact the relevant authorities when needed.

Remote Monitoring

As a result of advancements in technology, most control panels now allow you to remotely monitor your alarm system from smart devices such as your phone and tablet. This means that whenever you are away from your premises, you’ll be instantly notified if an alarm is triggered. Ideal if you are spending time away, as this provides the reassurance that you need to know your belongings are safe. The security company that installed your system will also be notified if an alarm gets triggered and will immediately contact you.

Chwarae Teg Event

Chwarae Teg (Welsh for 'fair play') is a charity whose stated mission is "to help ensure that Women in Wales can enter the workplace, develop their skills and build rewarding careers". At the Virgin Money Lounge in the centre of Cardiff last night, Chwarae Teg launched their new 'FairPlay Employer Network' with an event that brought together representatives from numerous Welsh businesses, including IDS Security Systems Ltd.

As a woman-led company, we at IDS Security are very much aligned with what Chwarae Teg are working to achieve. Our Managing Director Julie Halton attended the FairPlay Employer Network event in Cardiff last night and found it to be an inspirational experience. The primary topic of focus for the evening was inclusive recruitment and how it can drive success when done correctly - guest speaker Ryan Cullen gave a very insightful talk on this subject, using his own employer DevOpsGroup as a real-life example of the benefits that can come from switching to a more inclusive recruitment policy.

This was the first of what promises to be a most enlightening series of Chwarae Teg business events, and we look forward to details of the next FairPlay Employer Network evening.
