Wall covered in CCTV cameras

CCTV cameras are a tried and tested method for protecting business premises. Not only is CCTV an effective way to deter (and capture evidence of) criminal behaviour, modern systems can also be tied to smart systems that will trigger facilities like lights, doors and gates to give you extra peace of mind.

If you're beginning to think about installing CCTV cameras, it's important to know the basics of where to place your cameras in order to make the most of your security system. Placing cameras in the wrong points may render your security system useless, so make sure you have the right number of cameras in the right places!

Where to place your CCTV cameras

Here are our recommendations...

Anywhere past break-ins occurred

Looking at the history of your building will make it easier to identify and monitor potential weak points. If intrusions have occurred in the past, it's important to increase security at the break-in point(s) to make sure lightning doesn't strike twice.

Easy targets

Spots like the front door, back door and ground-floor windows represent very obvious access points for burglars and trespassers. These are key places to consider when installing CCTV cameras, as the majority of break-ins occur in these vulnerable spots. Nearly 75% of thieves come in through the front door, so this is a particularly important spot to monitor.

Places with valuable items

Locations where high-value items are kept (e.g. garages, till points, offices housing large amounts of cash) can be an attractive target for criminals. Placing CCTV cameras in these high-risk areas should help to keep your most valuable assets safe.

Blind spots

Even a small blind spot can present an opportunity for a crafty criminal. Use multiple cameras to cover multiple angles and eliminate blind spots - make sure there's nowhere for would-be thieves to hide!

Communal areas

Hallways, kitchens and communal work areas are ideal places to install CCTV cameras. Remember to ensure that your CCTV cameras aren't monitoring other people's properties or private areas like restrooms.

IDS Security's expert security engineers have been installing CCTV cameras for years - we can carry out a survey of your premises and design a CCTV camera system that's ideal for your requirements.

Equipping your home with a personal CCTV camera can be extremely useful for a wide variety of reasons, ranging from deterring criminal activity to catching the culprits red-handed.

However, it can also act as an avenue for capturing the weird, the wonderful and the unexplained and commonly crops up in the news across the world for its ability to

incredible sights caught on home security cameras

Weird, Wonderful and Unexplained

While there are literally hundreds of examples of amazing home security footage the world over, ranging from chilling ghost sightings to attempted burglaries gone awry, we’ve picked a small handful of the best light-hearted examples of what goes on when the red light is showing.

The Weird: Taste Test

The electric doorbell has been a useful addition to home technology worldwide since its invention way back in the early 1900s. That being said, one use the humble doorbell isn’t famed for is its taste.

However, it seems nobody told Roberto Daniel Arroyo that fact and the California resident decided to put it to the test one winter evening.

In January 2019, Arroya was caught on a home security camera licking a doorbell of a local neighbourhood home… for three hours, no less.

Following the bizarre incident, Arroyo was charged with loitering while the moreish doorbell was thoroughly disinfected and presumably offered counselling.

The Wonderful: Ludwig Van Beartoven

A family in Colorado returned home from a weekend away to find that their house had been broken into. However, upon closer inspection, the security footage told a far grizzlier tale…

Home cameras had recorded the whole incident, which showed that their house had in fact been visited by a wild bear.

The large black bear was seen prowling around the house throughout the video, nosing around the living room and other areas.

Luckily, the placid character refrained from exercising his right to bear arms and damage was kept to the bear minimum.

I did, however, stop to have a quick play on the piano during his brief stay.

The Unexplained: Creature of the Night

In June 2019, Vivian Gomez made a spell-binding discovery when viewing her own home security camera one Sunday morning.

The video, taken the night before, seemed to show a bizarre creature strutting down the driveway, performing a chicken dance.

Gomez made her weird home security footage public when she posted it on Facebook and it didn’t take long for the clip to go viral.

Many watching the video liken the creature’s appearance and movements to that of Dobby the house-elf from Harry Potter.

Meanwhile, others have taken a far less imaginative approach to the fantastical beast and chalk it up to her young son goofing around with pants on his head.

Either way, it remains a bizarre and disturbing sight!

Keeping your eyes on all aspects of your business is the best way to keep things ticking over smoothly.

It's undeniable that installing CCTV cameras in any space instantly improves security and reduces the likelihood of illegal activities and vandalism. This, understandably, makes CCTV systems an appealing option for workspaces and offices, where business owners and managers need to keep their property safe. Besides the obvious security benefits, office CCTV systems also allow employers to monitor the productivity of staff.

External Office CCTV Systems

Installing CCTV cameras around the perimeter of your office is a sure-fire way to protect your property. The camera itself will act as a deterrent to anyone who is considering trespassing on your property, vandalising it, or committing any other illegal activities. There are few people who would be brave enough to commit a crime in full view of watchful eyes!

Besides preventing criminal activities, external office security systems can be used to observe the people using the office car park, as well as clients and other members of the public entering and leaving the premises. This keeps your visitors and your employees safe at work.

Internal Office CCTV Systems

If you are a business owner who is often away from the office, installing CCTV cameras for the office is a great way to keep your eye on what goes on behind closed doors! You can observe how well your employees are managing their time, whether they are working efficiently, and you can keep a record of office behaviour in case any office disputes occur.

Of course, if you want to install CCTV cameras in the office, you will need to notify your employees that they will be recorded. You can read more about data protection and using CCTV inside your business premises here

how does CCTV work

A CCTV system, or closed-circuit television system, can be used for a variety of purposes and in a variety of places. Typically, CCTV cameras are installed in places where there is a higher than usual security risk, allowing an operator to keep a physical record of all of the events that take place there. In this blog, we'll take a look at how CCTV systems work, along with some of the different types available and the most common uses.

With fires contributing to countless injuries in the workplace every year, it is imperative that a proper fire safety measure such as a fire alarm is incorporated into your office security system. It is required by law, under Section 4 of the government’s guide to fire safety in the workplace, to have a ‘fire detection and warning system’, so this is not an office security system measure you can miss.

The type of fire alarm system you choose depends on the building and the nature of the work that is carried out within your business. To get a better understanding of the exact fire alarm solution you need, speak to our security system technicians.
