A CCTV system, or closed-circuit television system, can be used for a variety of purposes and in a variety of places. Typically, CCTV cameras are installed in places where there is a higher than usual security risk, allowing an operator to keep a physical record of all of the events that take place there. In this blog, we take a look at how CCTV systems work, some of the different types available, and the most common uses.

How does a CCTV system work?

To run an effective CCTV system, you typically need the following four elements; a camera, a camera lens, a monitor, and a media recording device. Combined, these four things allow the user to observe and record the events in a specific location 24/7. The CCTV system can be made up of multiple cameras making it possible to observe multiple places at once if necessary, or view the same location from a variety of different angles.

How does the system actually work? While CCTV cameras may look very similar to your average video camera, there are a few important differences to note. CCTV cameras are capable of operating without a person physically monitoring them. This is highly advantageous when you cannot monitor the area yourself or employ someone to do so. CCTV cameras are also capable of streaming the video footage they capture to a monitor wirelessly and in real-time. This means that an operator can detect and alert people to potential security breaches in multiple locations quickly and efficiently.

Can I install CCTV at home?

Nowadays, CCTV systems are fairly easy to get hold of, set up, and can even be operated from a remote location using a smartphone or laptop computer. That's why more and more homeowners and landlords are installing CCTV systems in residential areas.

A CCTV camera that is favoured by consumers for its ease of use is IP cameras. IP cameras are small, offer great picture quality, and can be operated using a smartphone via an internet connection. You simply connect the camera to an app or online account and voila, you can check what's going on in your home, garden, even living room whenever you like at the touch of a button.

Where are you likely to see CCTV in operation?

It is not uncommon for most busy public areas to have some type of CCTV system installed. You will spot them outside most schools, on most trains, and beside roads. They're primarily there to keep us safe, settle disputes and prevent crimes. Luckily, CCTV is often very effective at doing all of these things so that we can worry about other things.

Rather than having to sit through hours of footage, CCTV analytics can let us know where we need to look and what this footage can tell us. Event-driven analytics relieves the burden that operators have previously had to deal with. Now CCTV analytics can tell us when someone has happened on camera, for instance when there has been movement that may signal an intruder.

With scalable systems, we can now efficiently monitor larger areas with far more ease. This not only gives us more effective data that is easier to gather but it also requires a lot less manpower which will save you money on your security system. By integrating automatic analysis, detection and alerts CCTV analytics systems give us the added security that we won't miss a thing. CCTV software can now initiate recording, alarms and a range of other actions automatically, making them far more intelligent than ever before.

This CCTV software is intelligent enough to detect a wide range of information. Our CCTV analytics systems can detect:

  • Intruder detection
  • People counting
  • Queue analysis
