Security Systems for Libraries

Libraries provide a peaceful, welcoming and educational space for many communities, which is why it is crucial that there are security systems in place to protect their assets and ensure the safety of patrons and staff.

Not sure what kind of security your library needs? Here’s how IDS can help!

CCTV Cameras

CCTV surveillance cameras are a key part of any security system as they deter criminal behaviour like theft and vandalism and can provide valuable evidence if an incident does occur on site. CCTV cameras should be placed at entrances and exits to the library alongside any other high-traffic areas or sections with valuable items like technology or rare books.

You can even get security cameras installed with motion detectors that trigger automatic recording when motion is detected. This is useful as it cuts down the amount of footage that needs to be stored.

Plus, many modern CCTV systems have the option for remote monitoring, so even if you're not on site yourself, you can still check in to make sure everything is running smoothly!

Access Control

Access control systems, like key cards and biometric scanners, can also be beneficial for libraries, particularly those with restricted areas like staff rooms, archives and rare book sections. These systems ensure that only authorised personnel can enter restricted areas and handle valuable stock or technology.

Without proper security, irreplaceable materials like historical manuscripts, documents, artwork and books are at risk of theft, damage or vandalism.

Access control systems can even be set up to automatically lock down certain areas of the library in an emergency like a robbery, helping to protect employees, customers and inventory from harm.

Alarm Systems

Alarm systems are another great security option for libraries. Not only will a loud alarm alert any passersby or neighbouring businesses that there has been a break in, but you can also equip your library with alarm systems that activate if someone tries to exit the building with a book or other material that hasn’t been properly checked out.

It is recommended that you install several intruder alarms with motion sensors around your library, particularly in areas with valuable items and near windows and doors. Displaying a sign that indicates the presence of an alarm system can also help to discourage any thieves from targeting your library altogether.
